I downloaded the Hank William catalog the other night, and I've been going through it tonight as I work. All that old country music, work songs and chants, gospel songs and the blues -- what they call root music -- all leads to folk, rock, r&b, rap, and jazz. It's the essential American music -- I think the greatest contributions to world culture that we've made. Forget the Big Mac -- the world is forever changed by rock and roll, by soul, by rap. Williams is so smooth and sad sometimes, but when the man yodels, it drives me nuts in the best way possible. Hank Williams died at 29 -- so much human emotion in that young voice.
Plus, all this old-timey music really reminds me of my mom and dad. When I was little, they used to sing me some of these songs, like
"Hey good lookin', whatcha got cookin', how's about cookin' something up with me? Hey sweet baby, dontcha think maybe we could find us a brand new recipe? I got a hot rod Ford and a 2 dollar bill, and I know a spot right over the hill, there's soda pop and the dancin's free, so if you wanna have fun, come along with me. Hey good lookin', whatcha got cookin', how's about cookin' something up with me?"
