Over the past decade negative views on teen pregnancy seem to have become a thing of the past. There have been countless T.V. programs, and documentaries on the subject. Lori Auerlia Williams puts a different spin on teen pregnancy in her book entitled “Broken China.” Have you ever done something completely impulsive, and out of character do to boredom? Well this is exactly how China Cup Cameron became pregnant with her best friend Trip’s baby at thirteen years old. As if her life wasn’t complicated enough, China was still trying to cope with the recent loss of her mother. Since her mother’s passing she’d been forced to live with her paralyzed uncle. Despite ridicule from Trip’s mother China had a baby girl, and named her Amina. China struggled to take care of Amina, but she never went without. Then another tragedy altered China’s life once again. Amina suddenly died from a heart complication that China knew nothing about. She was only two years old. Full of anger and guilt China was determined to give Amina the best funeral possible. In order for this to happen she had to borrow money from the mortuary. When the time comes to pay the money back China quickly realizes minimum wage isn’t going to cut it. In desperate need of money China turns to Obsidian Queens a local gentlemen’s club in town, and drops out of school. Is China going to strip to pay off her debt? Well that’s something you’re going to have to find out for yourself.
I would recommend this book to people that love a good plot. Its not one of those books that after a few pages you can guess the ending. This is a coming of age story that shows you everyone has to grow up at some point. When I read the first page of this book I was immediately drawn in. I’m sure anyone could read this book, and take some life wisdom from it.
