Katniss Everdeen is a very strong, independent 16 year old girl. When her father died in a mining accident, she had to step in as the supporter of the family. Because Katniss’s mother was so devastated after her father’s incident, she also had to take care of her little sister Primrose. Prim meant everything to Katniss. As the sole supporter of the family, Katniss had to provide the family’s food. Even though it was against the law and punishable by death to hunt in the forest outside District 12, she knew it was her only option. Her father had shown her how to use a bow and arrow and about all the edible and posionous plants in the forest so she wasn’t completely oblivious on how to hunt.
Also, she wasn’t alone. Katniss had met Gale while she was hunting after her father’s death. Initially, Gale was a little hesitant about Katniss but they soon found that they had more in common than what they thought; they both had lost their father’s and both were the providers for their family. So they struck up a very tight relationship. Although their relationship was strictly friends, they spent numerous hours and days of hunting together and talking. Gale was one of the most important people in Katniss’s life.
Although Katniss’s poorness and near starvation were bad, there was something worse. The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is a “game” where 2 people– a girl and a boy – from each district are chosen to fight to the death in front of everyone in the Capital and all of the 12 Districts. The “players” are chosen by a random draw of people within the age limit – 12 to 18. The day of the drawing Prim, Katniss, and their mother were so stressed. Their family couldn’t afford to have Katniss chosen because she was their provider. They never dreamed of what would happen next.
The day of the drawing everybody from the District gathered in the Square, as they always did for this event. Onlookers watched as all the kids with their names in the drawing anxiously and nervously awaited their fate. The announcer came on stage and proceeded to draw the girl’s name first. All the girls held their breath as the announcer drew the name and read it aloud. “Primrose Everdeen.”
