SSR Blog

Silent Sustained Reading is always a treat, there is nothing like having 40 minutes or so of just enjoying a novel. Even though I was accused of fake reading which by the way was uncalled for Ms. Fletcher! I have to admit I haven't done as much reading this semester as I wanted to; however, the reading that I did accomplish was fantastic. The first book I would like to mention is The Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff. It is a very layered and detailed novel about a woman who was impregnated by her professor. She is forced to move back in with her "hippie" mom who is now a "Jesus Freak" and even though she has her own struggles she helps to get her daughter's life back on track. To keep busy her mom forces her to do some sort of project to stay busy in the time being. She decides to use the entire town's resources to find out who her real dad is, which leads to many hidden secrets and a past that she could have never imagined. Unfortunately I never finished it, do to the fact we had winter break, and I just could not get back into it. I do highly recommend it; just make sure to invest the time to follow all the key details. Another novel I finished this semester is Go Ask Alice written anonymously. The diary follows a troubled young teenager who just wants to fit in and be accepted by her peers in family. Since she is an outcast she uses drugs as her escape from reality and her so called happiness. As her entries continue on it becomes clear she wants to become a better person, and better herself so she can help others in her situation. Now the ending is on the back of the book, but I really advised skipping the synopsis, because it only leaves you in sadness and heartache. Just read through the story and replace the ending with your own happy thoughts. For next semester I do have higher goals of reading more, and having more to talk about on my next SSR blog.
