I Believe in

I believe in miracles.
Many things that happen in everyday life are overlooked and are shrugged off as if they are insignificant. For example, when a car is turning a corner and almost hits somebody. Usually, the person who was almost hit thinks oh my gosh, can’t they pay attention and possibly a few other choice words. I have never had anyone come up to me and say “It is a miracle I’m alive, thank goodness that car stopped in time!”
About three years ago from December my grandfather was in and out of hospitals for months. The doctors could not help him, except to make him comfortable. At one point, they said if they did not do anything he would die in six weeks. After three months in Florida, they were forced to move my sick grandfather back to New York because their insurance only covered them in Florida for three months. Once they arrived back in New York he was hospitalized yet again.
At this point our whole family was becoming frustrated and bitter towards the doctors that could not help my grandfather and his enlarged heart. One day, a doctor came in and said, “Why have not you been put on the heart transplant list?” Shocked by the question, my grandmother replied, “He is seventy years old.” The doctor was not all deterred by this and proceeded to move towards that end. One week later he was on the list. A week after that he was at the top of the list.
It was the last day of school and I was hanging out with my friends and my mom called and told me that there was a heart for Grandpa. My entire family was floored. He was seventy years old, made it to the top of the heart transplant list, and now there was a new heart for him. That night I went to bed expecting to have a sleepless night, but I slept soundly and woke up around 7:30 a.m. At first I panicked thinking what happened? Then I felt a calmness creep over me and slowly walked into my parents room braced for the worst and hoping for the best. I turned the corner and my parents looked exhausted. I proceeded to ask the question I was terrified to know the answer to. “Is Grandpa okay?” My mom looked over at me and told me what I was praying to hear, “He’s doing really well right now. The surgery was successful.”
Our belief in miracles was taken to a new level. We experienced one right in front of our eyes. My grandpa who was 70 years old received a heart transplant, one the oldest people ever to get one. Miracles are real and they happen every day, this I believe.
