SSR: When It Happens

For this semester’s SSR , I found that some Monday’s were easier than others. At first, I just couldn’t find a book that really captured my attention, causing me to dread SSR. This occurred for at least a month until I bought When It Happens by Susane Colasnti and was instantly hooked. As a girl, we are known to only read love stories, with the happy ending and to tell the truth, that’s exactly what this book is. But you have to trust me! It’s better than all the rest. A typical, romantic, boy meets girl book, it has become one of my favorites thus far.
The story is told between the alternating views of the two main characters, Sara and Tobey. Sara, has only had two goals in her life since she was little, to get into her first-choice college and to find love (aren’t we all?). So when the popular jock, Dave, with his good looks and charismatic personality asks her out, she’s thrilled! Having the most popular boy on her right arm is all she’s ever dreamed of, but as time trails on, Sara realizes that Dave isn’t everything she’s built him up to be. That the butterflies in her stomach she’s been longing for, just isn’t there with him. So what’s a girl to do? Break up with the most idealized boy in the school or move on and wait for true love. And then we are introduced to Tobey, an aspiring musician with two goals as well. One, to win their school’s Battle of the Bands, and two, to win Sara’s heart. So while Sara contemplates back and forth on whether or not to stay with Mr. Popular, Tobey is devising a plan to make Sara realize that what she has with Dave is nothing close to what they could have.
Overall, I would recommend this book to boys and girls. Told from both the male and female perspective, this book truly gives an amazing insight into what the other sex is thinking. I would also recommend this book to anyone who craves books with a little bit of romance and drama. Also, I truly believe that because of the character’s age and how they are seniors, we can all relate. Truly a good book and everyone should read it. Oh! And just ask if you ever want to borrow it! :]
