Book Review : Slam

My reading experience has been good this semester. I didn’t really get the time to read many books but I did manage to read two books. I read Slam and Fight Club. I’m a sports guy so my favorite book out of these two was Slam. The book is written by Walter Dean Meyers. I like the style that he used in the book. He wrote in a tone that exemplified the ghetto kid in the good school. His hood is Harlem but since his mom wants him to do better in life he got sent to Latimer Prep. His boy goes to Carter High School and he is supposed to be the best player in the league. Slam thinks he is just the best player to ever live. On his new team he is the only legitimate baller. He doesn’t think he has to work because he feels like there is nobody that can tell him what to do or stop him. His boy from Carver High School is finding new ways to get groupies and other luxuries that none of the kids from the hood usually have. There is this one girl Mtisha that Slam is just in love with. He struggles to find her affection and gain her trust. They are like best friends but only best friends. They exchange kisses but nothing develops. Slam’s boy starts to have so many luxurious new things that Slam begins to wonder where all this stuff is coming from. All the signs point to drug dealing but he did not think his best friend would revert to such activities. He struggles to question his friend about this and every time the opportunity arises he finds a way around the question. He progresses through the league and leads his team to victory. This was a really good book. I would especially recommend it for people that love basketball or just sports in general. The book is a great book for leisure but is not really that challenging.
