I have read two books by Jennifer Weiner which are about a mother daughter relationship. In her book "Good in Bed" Cannie Shapiro is a writer for The Philadelphia Examiner who recently broke up with her boyfriend. Every month she has to suffer through reading her boyfriend's article in Moxie about her being overweight or about his new love life. She doesn't know what to do with herself so she goes to a weight loss center to see if she can have surgery. Cannie can't follow through with the weight loss because she becomes pregnant. A tragedy happens and she almost loses her baby. At first she didn't really want the responsibility of raising a child but then feels as though she cannot live without her baby. Cannie publishes a book about the struggles she went through. In "Certain Girls" Cannie is happily married and spends her time writing books under a pen name and preparing for her daughter, Joy's bat mitzvah. Joy is a teen finding it hard to fit in with her hearing aids and lack of being popular. After she reads her mother's book she searches for what parts are real and what are just fiction. She doesn't talk to her mom about it but looks for facts on her own. Cannie still treats Joy as though she is a baby and tries to protect her from everything.
I definitely recommend these books. I must say that I shed a few tears reading them, especially at the end of "Certain Girls". They are about family loving each other and also about being proud with who you are. Because Cannie's father always criticized her and made her life horrible by abandoning her family, it made me feel lucky and grateful to be with my parents who really do care about me. Jennifer Weiner is also the author of "In Her Shoes", a movie I liked, which is why I read these other books. There are other books I recently bought by her that I am planning to read so I will see if they are as good as her others.
