Okay, so I was reading Megan Meade's Guide To the McGowan Boys. Your typical sweet and sassy girl meets boy story. I was flipping through the back after reading it and came across someone's recommendation of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (book one), City of Ashes (book two), and City of Glass (book three) by Cassandra Clare. Now this is not the kind of book I normally read. I mean City of Bones, Ashes, Glass, what the heck? But I decided to give it a shot. And guess what? I LOVED IT! Or should I say them. You can't read one without reading the other; you have to read all three. Anyway, in the book, Clarissa Fray is your typical fifteen almost sixteen-year-old girl. She lives in New York, and one night, decided to go to a club with her best friend Simon. That's where she met Jace: the seventeen-year-old boy who looks a lot like an angel and acts like a jerk. Jace and his adopted brother and sister Alex and Isabel are shadowhunters: human-angel hybrids that hunt down demons while also keeping peace between the warlocks, werewolves, vampires, faeries and other mythical creatures who inhabit the earth. And Clary is not suppose to see them because they are wearing glamour, but she does. Now, the only way Clary can see through that glamour was if she was a shadowhunter too.
Clary's life like she knew it changed that night. She discovered that she was indeed a shadowhunter, that her mother was once married to Valentine, her father, and the sworn enemy of the Claves (the society that Jace and his adopted parents belong to).
Just like that, Clary finds herself in a world way more complicated than she can ever imagine: Valentine has taken her mother to who knows where because she has the mortal cup, Simon is in love with her (but she only likes him as a friend), Luke, her mother's best friend and the man that's like a father to Clary is a werewolf. Valentine has already screwed the Clave over once and he's planning to do it again by taking over the world. The man doesn't know the difference between good and evil. He wants what he wants and what he wants is what he's going to get. It doesn't matter if what he wants is very bad for everyone else. It's up to Jace and Clary to stop him. Did I mention that Clary is in love with Jace (he loves her too although she doesn't know it...yet)?
So what happens when Clary and Jace find out that they are brother and sister? Now that's a twist no one was expecting. Come to think of it the story is full of unexpected twists. This is a story about true love and power so what's with the brother and sister craziness. Something is off right? I mean a brother and a sister can't be in love with each other right? I am dyeing to tell you more, but you're just going to have to read it and find out what happens. You won't regret it. It's so good, it's dangerous. I should probably mention that this kind of book particularly appeals to young females. But I think the male species might enjoy it too if they can get pass the um... passionate stuff. It's dark, sexy, adventurous, thrilling, full of suspense, and beautiful. It's like Twilight, only better.
