SSR BLOG Thirteen Reasons Why

The book Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher has an amazing message behind it. It makes you think twice before you’re mean to people. The books about a girl, Hannah Baker who kills herself and nobody really knows why. She was beautiful, popular and no one really thought anything was wrong with her. She leaves behind 13 tapes for 13 different people. Each person receives the tapes after one another. Clay, a boy she sends the tapes to, is sort of excited when he receives the package. The package has no return address but as he opens it he realizes it’s from Hannah. He has all of this fear building up as he listens to the tapes of the others because they were little things, things that don’t seem significant but obviously affected her in a larger perspective. He keeps wondering what he did, did he contribute to this girls death, a girl that he was in love with. As Clay listens to the tapes he becomes filled with anger, how could people do these things to her? Listening to the tapes makes Clay look at the world differently. He realizes that even the littlest of things can affect people. He learns the warning signs of people slipping. When Clay’s done with the tapes he has to send them to the next reason why. This book isn’t the most advance reading level; I took it from my little sister. Even though it doesn’t have fancy language it was still an amazing book. I know I’ll sound like a corn ball saying it changed the way I think but it honestly did. It appeals to young teenage girls but I think older ones will like it too. It’s not the happiest of books but it definitely is one of the most meaningful that I’ve read. It doesn’t have a happy ending and you might have some mixed feelings at the end of reading it but there’s sort of an unexpected ending. I read it in the first week of school and read it in a night, I couldn’t put it down, I really love it its one of my favorites. I hope a few people read it, it’s definitely an easy read maybe you’ll get something out of it just like I did.
