SSR Book Review

“The Hunger Games” Book Review

Over the course of the semester I have picked books off the shelf, acted like I was reading while doing other work and when the bell rung I put the book back on the shelf and went on with my day. It wasn't until a day in the library that a book was recommended to me by Mrs. Ellis that I would finally read a book attentively and eventually finish. This book offers a new degree of science-fiction, one unmatched by the hundreds of stories focus on intergalactic warfare and deformed aliens. Rather it focuses on a world that we're more aware of, Earth, only after the destruction and reconstruction of North America. This book captivates the reader by introducing a character we can someway-or-another relate to, a 12 year old struggling to keep her family alive. That book is none other than “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins.

“The Hunger Games” provides an amazing and deep storyline in what could be seen as a horrid and inhumane plot-line. The book starts off pretty slow—not slow enough that each page is excruciating to read—but steady enough to guide you into atmosphere. At first you're dropped a small world, Katniss' world, but as the story progresses the world around you begins to take form and expand into an other dimension. Unlike many stories that offer 2D environments to fill the background, “The Hunger Games” creates a breathing setting that waits to be explored by the reader. This book is the perfect for a quick read because it does not hesitate to jump into that action. Minutes easily turn to seconds while reading each gripping page, whether you're an avid reader or a neophyte on the subject. I recommend this book to anybody who loves action or is in need of something to have your mind chew on.

After reading this book I've been motivated to rediscover my long-lost love for reading. After months of neglecting the necessity of appreciating literature, I feel that there must be books that are as compelling and interesting out there. Coming into this next semester I can't wait to pick up a new book to add to my collection.
