Speak avec mim todas las talen de dunia. (Speak with me all the languages of the world)
*In English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, Irish, and Indonesian
I truly believe in learning as many languages as possible in our lifetimes. Having a diverse vocabulary and being educated is a start but we need to expand our horizons. Not only to say hello and goodbye in French, but to carry a conversation. Whether you master the accent or not, don't fret. The point is to try and learn.
Here in the United States students are told to take two years of a foreign language, but it isn't mandatory and this only happens once you reach high school. As a result most kids who are native to the U.S. and have American parents' graduate high school speaking one mandatory class in secondary schools. As we learn another language, we don't simply learn how speak it and write it, but we obtain the opportunity to immerse in a culture and a way of life. Learning customs, slang, traditions, and especially about food can benefit us in so many ways. The vibrancies each an every culture has to offer only increase our knowledege of the world.
People who speak many languages facilitate life for themselves. Getting a job becomes that much easier; the chances of being "lost" become that much smaller. When you go in for a job interview the chances that they will hire one person out of two with the same qualifications when one is bilingual, are higher for that person that can speak more than the one language. The laziness we direct towards making an effort to learn grammar and accents and anything else in a language is absurd. Have the desire and zeal to captivate the way people unlike you communicate, then maybe we would have more understanding of each other.
Miscommunication, the main cause of war and conflict, would decrease and our world could stand at peace with itself. How many wars, battles, or even a loss of friendship do you think have happened because people could not communicate. Granted, not only from not speaking the same language, but from not expressing emotion or actions adequately or thuroughly, have these situations occurred. However, speaking a variety of languages only makes a difficult situation not as difficult.
Human beings have a way with each other; without being able to comprehend language we find a way to communicate. Nevertheless, life is already a struggle, why not make it just a tad bit simpler? I speak Spanish as well as English and my goal in life is to learn French and Italian for sure. From there I may move on to Portuguese or an African dialect just because I am capable and love language. For those of you, who believe that you can only speak the language you were raised speaking and nothing else don't negate a human's natural ability to learn; strive for more than you already know.
