This I Believe

I believe that sports can save the world. Sports above all things is what can keep every one of all color, creed, and creation, together. It is clear, concise, and fair. It is the good, the bad, and the ugly. People like to say that sports is an escape form life. A way to escape and get away from the problems we face everyday. I believe that sports are not an escape, but that it is fused into it.

What separates sports from any other activity is the fact that it is for everyone. No matter where you come from, you can play football. Whatever your family’s income is you can play on the soccer team. You don’t have to know someone to get in, or have to be a member of a family. There is no application to fill out, no essays to turn in. All it takes is a desire to play and the integrity to have fun. The only judging done on the field are actual judges. It’s a way in; when someone talks about their favorite sports teams they always say, “we” and “us”. When you are a fan you are apart of that team. You cry when they win or when they lose, and no matter what the next day will come. There is also the freedom that comes with being a fan. Last time I checked, there are only two teams you can root for for President, while there’s 32 to root for for the Super Bowl. It gives you the freedom to hate. You can yell, scream, and argue with a rival as much as you want and in the end you will both be right. Imagine where all that hate would go without sports.

After a game there is a winner and a loser. That’s it, there are no arguments about feelings or if there is clear as daylight evidence that they are actual winners. If you are beat, you’re beat, stop complaining about it and beat them the next time. It’s next to impossible to get confused about it. The rules are simple, clear, and you follow them, no excuses. If you don’t stay honest about it, then get the hell out of here.

Just when you thought that it couldn’t happen, it happens. The Cinderella story out of nowhere shocks the world. Team goes from worst to first overnight. Defeating cancer and winning seven more times. Wether you win by almost seven-tenths of a second, or by daylight, your mind is completely blown. But what separates sports from almost any category is the fact that anything is possible. Until recently, the thought of anyone becoming President was out of mind, but anyone can always dream of growing up to beat the New York Yankees.

  1. Solid essay Mr. Sack! I couldn't agree more! Sports takes individuals and allows them to form an alliance all striving for the same goal. Whether watching or playing, sports help form a second personality, a chance to be a totally different person beyond the gates of our school. When a person steps onto the field, court, arena, etc. they have the opportunity to change their mindset and work together for a common purpose.
